Purpose:Through the arm of its Yeshiva, Derech Etz Chaim, year(s) of Torah study in Israel are offered to post-high school from abroad, before beginning university studies
Activities:Torah
Geographic Location:In Jerusalem
Description:Derech Etz Chaim is focused on independence: independence in learning, independence in thinking and independence of the individual as part of the community. DEC offers a non-institutional environment, challenging you to think for yourself. You will be appreciated for who you are while you strive towards the realization of your unique potential. A close kesher (connection) with your Rebbeim coupled with a dynamic learning environment will help you lay the foundation upon which your future learning will firmly stand. Small classes, top-notch facilities and dynamic Rebbeim are all key elements of the Derech Etz Chaim experience. Established in 1998, Derech Etz Chaim is widely regarded as one of the premier yeshiva programs catering to post-high school study in Israel. The Yeshiva is located in Jerusalem's Har Nof neighborhood, overlooking the scenic Jerusalem Forest.
Programs:The day's main focus is on Gemara. Mornings are devoted to in depth B'Iyun seder and Shiur, while the afternoon B'kiyut Program completes approximately 120 daf per year. Every student is challenged to learn entire Mesechtas-and to know them well. We believe that the skills acquired through both the B'Iyun and B'kiyut Programs will help form the framework necessary for independent study. Between 25 and 30 first year students are accepted each Elul. This figure is supplemented by approximately 15-20 students learning for their second or third year, as well as students learning on a graduate-level.

Comments:As a student at Derech Etz Chaim, you will also have an opportunity to participate in a number of yeshiva-wide trips around the country. We believe in integrating your day-to-day Torah learning with an acute appreciation for the unique beauty of Eretz Yisrael. Activities include rappelling, rafting, hiking, biking and general touring. There will be several overnights, as well as day trips and shabbatonim interspersed throughout the year. One or more of your Rabbeim will participate on each tiyul, allowing you to strengthen your connection in a non-academic setting. The Yeshiva participates in the American Flag Football League in Israel during the winter, and fields basketball and softball teams in the local leagues as well. The Yeshiva provides a weight room for student use, and rents an indoor gym for basketball.

Biography of
Aharon Katz:
With a broad background in Jewish education, Rabbi Katz is acutely aware of what can be accomplished in one short year. Holding a B.A. in Education and having directed programs for the Canadian Zionist Federation and the World Zionist Organization, R' Aharon is most proud of his relationships with R' Yaakov Weinberg z''l and R' Moshe Halberstam z''l from whom he obtained semichas.
